William (Bill) Glover was born November 29, 1937 and left us on August 20, 2011. He joined the US Navy on November 8, 1955, shortly after graduating high school. He arrived at boot camp in Great Lakes, ILL. and graduated December 6, 1955. He went to A School in San Diego, California, graduating May 11, 1956 and was ranked a Machinery Repairmen Class “A”. At that time he was assigned to the USS Cambria from 1956 to 1957. The USS Cambria (AP 36) was a Bayfield-class attack transport. He became a plank owner of the USS Ranger in 1957 and honorably discharged in November, 1958. Since I can’t ask my Dad all the particulars of his career, I can only tell you what he reminisced with me and that was the day he was assigned to the USS Ranger, was the best day of his life, till I came along, of course. I do know that he went to many places. On place I have pictures of, is Cuba. He had some adventures there and stories were told, I was just too little to remember. The ship also went to Italy, but Dad was unable to get shore time due to appendicitis. Dad was aboard the Ranger when it sailed around Cape Horn. He was also aboard the ship when the Ranger crossed the equator, where he participated in the custom of King Neptune’s court. He met and married my Mom, Shirley Miller, in Norfolk, VA, on May 2nd 1958. She was also enlisted in the US Navy. In September, 1970, he remarried to a wonderful lady, Barbara, and they were married almost 40 years. Bill and Shirley had two children, Charles and Julie. I am Julie and I married and had two children, Charles and Ryan. Ryan Edward is named after his grandfather, William Edward. Ryan also joined the Navy in August 2004 shortly after graduation. It was the many visits to his grandfather that he decided to join the Navy and took in all of his stories with great admiration. For my Dad, I collect memorabilia from the USS Ranger. I am very proud of my Dad and his service to the United States Navy. Julie Ann Roberts (Glover)
