"GOODBYE RANGER, WELL DONE!"

THERE ONCE WAS A GREAT SHIP NAMED 'RANGER',
WHICH OFTEN SAILED INTO DANGER;
FROM THE JUNGLES OF 'NAM
TO THE SANDS OF SADDAM,
NOTHING COULD BEGIN TO PHASE HER.

FROM THE BLACK GANG BELOW,
TO THE COOKS ON THE STOVE,
AND THE CLERKS WHO KEPT US IN CHANGE,
WE ALL DID OUR PART
AND KNOW IN OUR HEART
THAT OUR LIVES WERE BOTH EXCITING AND STRANGE.

FOR YOU CANNOT TELL
ANYONE WHO'S NOT SERVED
WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE ON THE OLD GIRL,
BUT MEMORY SERVES US AND SEA STORIES SUSTAIN US
AS MEMORIES CONTINUE TO SWIRL.

THE FLIGHT DECK IS SILENT
FROM THOSE DAYS THAT WERE VIOLENT
AND AIRCREWS SWARMED OVER HER DECK;
THE EFFORTS TO SAVE HER ENDED IN FAILURE
AND ALL OF US SAID 'AH HECK!'

THE DAY HAS COME
FOR THE GREAT GRAY LADY
TO FINALLY SAIL INTO THE SUN;
BUT WITH ONE LOUD VOICE WE SHALL ALL SING OUT
"GOODBYE RANGER, WELL DONE!"
